It is native to Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Zhejiang. Also naturalized in Taiwan, Japan, Nepal, Korea, and the Philippines. It is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree with smooth gray bark and a uniform spherical to hemispherical crown. It is dioecious, with separate male and female plants.
