This delightful radish from the chilly north of China is a verdant green with a uniquely sweet flavor. Dubbed the "fruit radish" in Beijing, these crisp and sweet roots are said to be a tasty substitute for fruit, with a texture and taste reminiscent of juicy pears. As winter descends upon northern China, these cylindrical radishes grow even sweeter, as if they've been kissed by the frost. A traditional delicacy at winter tea parties in Beijing, where the famous Beijing Opera is celebrated in opulent style. But we think they're just as great as a wintertime snack, full of sweet green goodness. Just remember to plant them in cool weather, ideally in the fall, about 50-60 days before the frost sets in.
