Xerophyta retinervis is a fascinating plant with blackened stems in the winter months but totally transformed in the early summer when covered with masses of blue flowers, especially after fire. The species is well adapted to survive extreme conditions such as drought, fires, and very cold temperatures. This small shrub, native to dry, rocky habitats and reminds of a small Cordyline but belongs in the strange family Velloziaceae, which is most closely related to Pandanus and Cyclanths. It makes an interesting, palm-like bonsai and has pretty, lily-like, purplish blue flowers.
